Competitive Antagonism

Synopsis

Preparation: guinea pig ileum. The theoretical derivation is shown of the equation relating response magnitude to the combined presence in the bathing fluids of agonist and competitive antagonist. The Biovideograph record includes the preparatory steps necessary for establishing reliable quantitative data using acetylcholine and histamine agonist induced responses and is followed by agonist administrations in the presence of atropine. Concludes with a summary of the results and a discussion of the differences between atropine action on the responses to acetylcholine and histamine and the selective antagonisn which it shows to acetylcholine.
