Guinea Pig Ilium

Synopsis
A computer simulation of the isolated, transmurally stimulated guinea pig ileum preparation ‘in vitro’ for teaching the pharmacology of the intestinal smooth muscle and the enteric nervous sytem. Students control the experiment using a stimulator (with control over voltage, frequency and duration of stimulation), a range of drugs (acetylcholine, clonidine, morphine, naloxone, phentolamine, atropine) with a range of doses and a facility that removes all traces of added drugs. Simulated contractions of the gut are displayed in a manner comparable to that of a chart recorded.
