- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: 1972 Derby - in Colour. DESCRIPTION: The 1972, 193rd Derby Stakes got under way in very bad weather, but the crowds’ spirits weren’t dampened. The Derby, more than any other race in the world, has that special magic. 22 runners set off, 1 1/2 miles later, after a really dramatic finish, Lester Piggott on Roberto (the favourite) won by a nose, from Rheingold and 3rd place went to Pentland Firth. An exciting race, and a 6th Derby win for Lester Piggott. SHOTLIST: GV Derby course pan to packed stands. SV zoom back to LV Queen & Duke of Norfolk and other members of the royal family.
