Career

Ced Baynes was a cameraman with Pathe, whose first surviving credit is for ‘BERLIN SEES BRITISH TATTOO’ in Pathe News No.47/66 of August 1947. Baynes was shown in flying gear and filming from a plane in ‘GREENLAND EXPEDITION’ in Pathe News No.51/72 of September 1951. Baynes filmed the funeral of George VI from a camera position at Westminster Hall for ‘THE LAST JOURNEY’ in Pathe News No.52/15 of February 1952. He was shown with a Gipsy fortune-teller in ‘THE DERBY 1952’ in Pathe News No.52/44 of May 1952. In May 1953 Baynes was shown with his camera in ‘CORONATION REHEARSAL’ in No.53/37, and in June 1953 he filmed at Stanhope Gate for ‘THE CORONATION OF H.M. QUEEN ELIZABETH’ in No.53/41. In September 1953 Baynes was shown boarding a helicopter with his camera in ‘PATHE DROPS IN ON PARIS’ in No.53/74. Baynes continued to appear in news stories, such as ‘B. & K. SAY GOODBYE’ in No.56/35 of April 1956, where he was shown filming Bulganin and Kruschev, or ‘REPORT FROM SUEZ’ in No.56/101 from December 1956, where he was shown filming the Prime Minister at London airport. Baynes was also featured in a comic item ‘EASTER CAVALCADE’ in Pathe News No.59/27 of April 1959, and, with an arrow through his hat, in ‘MEET THE REAL ARCHERS - Brighton’ in No.62/79 from October 1962. He was also shown on a camera truck in ‘LONDON AT CHRISTMAS’ in Pathe News No.67/102 from December 1967. Terry Gallacher [qv] recalled that after the closure of Pathe News in February 1970, ‘Ced Baynes became a freelance cameraman, contributing to Movietonews and UPMT as well as various producers in the UK.' As part of his freelance work Baynes was credited for filming ‘RACE OF CHAMPIONS’ in British Movietone News No.2181A of March 1971. He worked frequently for British Movietone for a number of years. His final credit is for ‘ARK ROYAL RETURNS HOME’ in British Movietone News No.2586 of December 1978.
