Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Departure of Royal Family to South Africa. DESCRIPTION: In wishing Their Majesties and the Princesses Bon Voyage and a successful visit, Movietone take pleasure in stating that the highlights of the Royal Progress will be presented throughout the duration of their tour. SHOTLIST: KS CU Union of South Africa Coat of Arms with title superimposed. Shot from Queen Victoria memorial, Royal cars leave Buckingham Palace, into camera, snow on ground. Pan as Royal procession circles QVM. Royal procession going up Mall, out of camera, crowds surge round cars. Crowds wave etc. as procession (closed cars) passes through Admiralty Arch panning to Whitehall. Elevated shot as Royal procession passes over Westminster Bridge, along York Road, crowds cheering, waving etc., cars turn into Waterloo Station. King’s car stops, Princesses alight followed by King and Queen, greeted (handshakes) by Chairman (Colonel Gore Browne) and General Manager (Sir Eustace Missenden) of Southern Railways. Inside station, King shakes hands with Mr Attlee, parliamentary dignitaries lined up, next to Attlee is Mr Chuter Ede, the King passes along the line followed by Queen and Princesses. Amongst those prominent are the Duke of Wellington and Lord Addison. SCU Princess Alice and Princess Marie Louise kissing Princess Elizabeth and Queen. Also prominent is the Earl of Athlone. Lady Patricia Ramsay saying (silent) goodbye to Royal Family, several angle shots of goodbyes. Others seen on the platform are Queen Mary. SCU Duchess of Kent. Elevated CU King and Queen. Royal Family board train. Crowds on platform. Whistles blow and train begins to pull out. Royal Family wave, standing by windows of train. CU front of engine decorated with Coat of Arms of South Africa and Union Jack. CU name of engine Lord Nelson. Train passing out of station. Slip pan. HMS Vanguard with docks in fore, pan of same. Royal cars arrive at dockyard, Royal Family alight, greeted by Commander in Chief, Admiral Sir Geoffrey Layton. King, who is dressed in naval uniform, inspects detachment of sailors, GV elevated and into camera shots. Pan of superstructure of HMS Vanguard. King and Queen board Vanguard followed by Princesses. King and Queen up gangway into camera. CU Royal Standard unfurled at masthead. Queen Mary coming aboard assisted off gangway by the King, following her are two Princesses and Duchess of Kent. Officer of Royal Marines salutes the King with sword. King inspects Marines, King shakes hands with Captain Agnew as he steps aboard. Sound only Royal Marine band playing during inspection. MS of Royal group, including King, Queen, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, Queen Mary, Duchess of Kent, Duke of Gloucester, Princess Royal (please keep, take great care of same, very useful at later date). Group shot of the above with name Vanguard in background. Interior GV dining room, King’s sitting room, King’s cabin (bedroom), and GV Queen’s bedroom. Vanguard slowly passes quay, in early morning mist. King and Queen with Princesses stand on gun turret. MS Vanguard almost silhouette passing quay. Over camera shot of Royal Family on gun turret. Elevated shot of ditto. Aerial shots of Vanguard passing through Channel with destroyers escort in opposite direction leaving her. As the Vanguard sails, a salute of 21 guns are fired. LS of guns firing in sound. The aerial material of the Vanguard and destroyers is also very good coverage.
