Career

In 1941 Lieutenant Hilton Craig was one of the naval censors who dealt with film, and David Samuelson [qv] later recalled projecting films for him to censor. After the war, however, he became a cameraman and interviewer for Movietone. Craig’s first credit is as cameraman on ‘AGRICULTURAL AUTUMN’ in British Movietone News No.907A of October 1946, and he first appears as interviewer in ''Z’ & ‘G’ CLASS CALL UP,' in British Movietone News No.1130A of February 1951, where ‘window cleaner stopped by Hilton Craig gives his opinion.' In January 1952 Craig was one of the Movietone cameramen assigned to cover the wreck of the ‘Flying Enterprise.' His naval experience proved valuable, and, according to Reg Sutton [qv], Craig directed the filming from Falmouth, ‘set up his own naval operations room and flitted hither and thither with Met reports on sea conditions and gave us final advice and chartered the tug which enabled us to be on the spot for the sinking.' After the sinking, Craig went in a tug with Jimmy Humphries [qv] to film Captain Carlsen’s arrival at Falmouth, and later interviewed him for ‘THE END OF THE ‘FLYING ENTERPRISE’' in British Movietone News No.1180. By January 1953 Craig may have been working for Pathe, who have film of him interviewing in this month.
