- Summary
- COI Synopis - In this programme, we look at what the sea can offer us in terms of energy, food and minerals. It also examines its awesome power and offers some solutions for safety at sea. The sea has many mysteries; but, Gloria, a kind of sonar camera, is helping to unravel one - the geology of the sea-bed. Slung beneath a ship, Gloria’s transducers fire pulses of sound, in thin slices, at the sea-bed. The time delay and strength of the returning signal, when re-converted to electrical impulses on board ship, can be used to make an image. Recorded on tape and development in a mobile darkroom, a long, linear picture of the hills and valleys of the sea-bed begins to appear.
