Cellular Energy: Thermodynamics and Living Cells

Synopsis
Begins with a summary of glycolysis, phosphorylation and dehydrogenation and the part of the electron transport chain in the production of ATP from glucose. The conventional view of the terminal phosphate bond of ATP as the site of an energy store is challenged and Dr Banks goes on to outline three systems in thermodynamic terms: isolated, closed and open. Concentrates on the open system which is like a living organism with homeostatic control and discusses the difference between homeostasis and equilibrium.
