Immunoblotting

Synopsis
Explains why attempting to detect the presence of protein samples directly from an electrophoresis gel is impractical, due to diffusion of the protein bends over time and the fragility of the gel itself. Describes the principles of immunoblotting, transferring the information from the gel to a nitrocellulose membrane, first with diagrams and then in the laboratory. Also illustrates and demonstrates a method of making a single specific protein on the membrane visible using an antibody to that protein, then adding a second antibody with an enzyme attached that will produce a coloured product when a substrate is added.
