- Summary
- Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: The Australian Trade Commission visits Salisbury when they visit the Finance Ministry and a Tobacco Factory.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - Most visitors to Salisbury are impressed by and like what they see, and this typifies the reactions of the Australian Trade Commission during their recent tour. The Commission succeeded in encouraging the sale of Australian goods in the Federation. They were received by Mr MacIntyre the Federal Minister of Finance. The Federation can well afford to increase its imports from Australia, as the balance of trade is well in the Federation’s favour. Two million pounds annually is paid by Australia for Rhodesian Tobacco. Some members of the Commission visited a Tobacco factory to gain first hand knowledge. Ex-servicemen probably remember that the Australians are great ones for rolling their own cigarettes, but hand rolled or tailor made, the consume tremendous quantities - literally barrel loads. Figures quoted on general trade show that the Federation sold Australia 12 times the value that it bought in return.
The Commission was on a fact finding as well as a selling tour and there are already Australian goods in Salisbury shop windows. If they have succeeded in fostering greater trade between the two countries, we can confidently expect the next chapter in this story to be ushered in on an upward note. - Keywords
