Summary
COI synopsis: The lungs are the last organs to develop and breathing problems kill many premature babies. At a London hospital, they’ve developed a quick and simple test which allows them to gauge the maturity of a baby’s lungs as soon as it’s born - and even while it’s still in the womb. The test depends on a phenomenon called "bubble clicking" - the strange behaviour of air bubbles when they’re mixed with a sample of the liquid from a baby’s lungs, or with a sample of the fluid which surrounds and protects the unborn child.
