Time to Be Born, A
- Synopsis
- Looks at three aspects of development that take place in the first few months of life. The cardiovascular system is already fully developed at birth, but the neonate’s first breaths trigger important changes in the circulation, changes that enable the baby to adapt to obtaining oxygenated blood from its lungs rather than from the placenta. Development of the lungs is incomplete at birth and continues for many months after birth. If lung development is insufficient, for instance in premature babies, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) can be a threat to life but can be cured if the deficiency of lung surfactant is made up. At birth a baby is thrust from the temperature-controlled environment of the womb into a potentially hostile environment where it must control its own body temperature. For the neonate, the greater danger is becoming too hot. Remote sensing techniques are leading to a greater understanding of the developmental processes both before and after birth.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
