Breathing Mechanism of the South American Lungfish ‘Lepidosiren Paradoxa’, The

Synopsis
Records research undertaken by I R Bishop and G E H Foxon on the mechanism by which the South American lungfish ventilates its lungs on its visits to the surface of the water in which it lives. The usual habitat is slow-flowing or stagnant waters where the oxygen content is extremely low, making oxygen uptake through the gills impracticable, The buccas force-pump method of filling the lungs is clearly shown. The research involved the use of radiographic and cineradiographic methods and the primary object of the film is to demonstrate these methods and the results obtained.
