- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Ships in the News. DESCRIPTION: Otago is the first ship ever built in Britain specially for the Royal New Zealand Navy, and she’s the first of a squadron of anti-submarine frigates for that service. The ship was launched by Princess Margaret who named her after the Province of Otago in the South of New ZealandThe 50 ton John Ashley is a new vessel for the Missions to Seamen. There is a small chapel on board, a recreation room, a cinema and a well-stocked library. Prince Philip boarded her at Westminster to attend the dedication and to accept the ship on behalf of the Mission.
