Career
Geoffrey Sumner was an actor, newsreel commentator, and film producer. Sumner entered the film industry in 1937 with Associated-British at Elstree, working as ‘actor, scriptwriter, editor and newsreel editor, etc.' After the outbreak of war in 1939 he joined the Directorate of Military Training, and helped to form the Directorate of Army Kinematography in Britain and India. On demobilisation in 1946 he became a commentator for British Movietone News - although he referred to himself as a ‘news reporter.' Sumner’s Movietone credits begin with No.893A in July 1946. He also resumed work with W. M. Larkins Studios, which made cartoon films, and where he later became managing director. Sumner also acted ‘silly-ass types’ in a number of films including ‘Mine Own Executioner’ (1947), ‘Helter Skelter’ (1949), and ‘Appointment With Venus’ (1951). Sumner’s last credit as Movietone commentator is for British Movietone News No.1933A in June 1966.
