Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: HMS Anson Arrives at Breakers Yard. DESCRIPTION: Throughout our life-time the battle-ship has been the nucleus of Sea Power. New battleships to join the Fleet in world war two included HMS Anson, named after George Anson, a great Naval figure of the 18th Century. And HMS Howe, who bore the name of the Lord Howe, who won victory on the Glorious First of June. Now, the day of the battleship is over, the day of famous ships that weathered the Winter storms to keep the sea routes open. HMS Anson is towed to her last berth, to the breakers’ yard in the Clyde. But she and battleships like her, no longer fit into the scheme of sea warfare in the atomic age. They’ve served their purpose well. History records the battle honours they have won, and a great tradition, worthily maintained by them is handed on. Handed on to the capital ships of the moment. SHOTLIST: Shots of HMS Anson passing the stern of HMS Adamant, submarine depot ship. Series of shots showing her passing HMS King George V while in the distance may be seen the Duke of York. Further shots as tugs bring the ship alongside the breakers yard. Library flash-backs: good scenes of battleships firing broadsides (day), also shots of Anson and Howe after their being commissioned.
