Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Battle for the Canals. DESCRIPTION: The mass of canals, rivers and estuaries in Holland have turned the battle there into a highly amphibious affair. Troops crossed the Wilhelmina Canal by using a smashed railway bridge. On 28th October Cologne sustained its heaviest attack of the war from ‘Lancasters’ and ‘Halifaxes’. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. GV of several "Alligators" (small landing craft) off coast of South Beveland. Various shots of same. One approaches shore loaded with German prisoners. "Alligator" straight out of sea up beach, & several out of camera. AFU - British troops run through streets of Hertogenbosch, fires background. Shermans fire machine guns. CU Bren Gunner firing Bren gun. British troops crawl along ground. Shermans firing machine guns. Carrying assault boats to canals, crossing canals, various shots. Bren gun being fired. Various shots of railway bridge wrecked, with British troops wading through water, more shots of troops crossing canals by assault boats. In Tilberg, British troops into camera along streets, pass fires. Population run out to greet soldiers, various shots of same. RAFFU - Aerial shots of Cologne completely covered with pall of smoke. CU Mitchell in flight over Roermond, bombs away, & hitting bridge over River Maas gets several direct hits. Explosions of same to finish.
