Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: White City Winners. DESCRIPTION: England v the Russian Federal Republic at the White City, in a meeting sponsored by the News of the World. The men’s hundred metres was won by David Jones in ten point five. A high jump win by Russia’s Valery Brumel was a certainty. He went higher and higher, finally setting a United Kingdom All-comers’ record at seven feet three. The four by a hundred metres relay proved to be a surprise win for England. A second night highlight was the women’s discus-throwing, and a world record of 193 feet six was set by Russia’s Tamara Press. Now, the five thousand metres. Gordon Pirie, running at such a meeting for the last time, made his final sprint with that famous stride of his, and went away to win easily from John Snowden, with the Russians right out of the picture.
