The BIRTH Television Archive is one of the major results an EU-funded project within the MEDIA+ programme. It is an extremely rich multimedia, multilingual webportal giving access to audiovisual and textual material (programme schedules, articles etc) on the early days of European Television. The archive was built up by five major European television archives - the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF), Nederlandse Instituut voor Beeld and Geluid, Radio Télévision Belgique Française (RTBF) and Südwestrundfunk (SWR). There are three different access layers to the resource: the general public, the academic community and television professionals, each available through free subscription. Everyone who visits BIRTH can access the low-resolution programme clips, photos, programme guides, articles, the timeline, the Knowledge Based Articles and the European Studies Network. The academic community has special access to the European Television Studies Network. This is a searchable database consisting of institutes and academics who are involved with the history of European television. The participating academics and institutes are able to upload and maintain their own listing so that it always remains up to date. For television professionals the BIRTH portal functions as a platform for the exchange and selling of high-resolution archive material, done on a bilateral basis between the two parties.

The inevitably huge Radio 3 website of course includes listings for the BBC’s classical music and arts radio channel, but there is a rich array of supporting information in the sections on Classical, Jazz, World and New, Arts and Drama, including sound and video clips, and sections devoted to individual programmes. Particularly welcome is the Feature Archive on past programmes. The live broadcast is also streamed from the site. The schedules were heavily revamped in 2007.

In March 2011 Discovery launched a UK website giving schedules for all its channels as well as guides to shows, image galleries and video clips. There is also a newsletter for receiving up-to-date news. However, this is still quite basic compared with the American Discovery Channel website which has quite elaborate pages for a much wider range of programmes featuring games and blogs as well as information on DVD availability.

BBC2’s flagship late-night news programme began transmission in January 1980. Always courting controversy, not least for the aggressive interview style of its presenters, it remains one of the most distinguished current affairs programme on British television. The Newsnight homepage on the BBCi website includes a good general overview of the programme’s history, and also includes a number of extended clips from the programme which require RealPlayer to view. Amongst the clips is the notorious grilling that presenter Jeremy Paxman gave to Michael Howard MP in the run-up to the 1997 General Election. The site also includes blogs from Mark Urban, Newsnight’s diplomatic and defence editor, and Paul Mason, the programme’s economics editor.
