BBC correspondents investigate global events, developments and issues. The collection is updated daily and episodes are available indefinitely. A vast selection of the programmes broadcast between 2007 and 2014 can be accessed via the Podcast Archive section where they are organised by year. More recent episodes are displayed in chronological order by date of transmission. Subject search is not supported, but this drawback is compensated with the guarantee that any time spend browsing will be rewarded with an interesting find. These include: a 50 minute programme on the controversial video This is America by Donald Glover about gun violence, mass shootings, racism and discrimination in the US; an investigation into Burundi-one of the most secretive countries in Africa, an insight into the little known astronomer George Ellery Hale, a look at robot cars filling our roads in the near future, and a report on the Yaba drug which is produced in Myanmar but consumed in Bangladesh.

An independent news website sourced from the academic and research community and delivered direct to the public. The Conversation launched in Australia in March 2011 and in the UK in May 2013. It is a not for profit educational entity, funded by universities, that aims to rebuild trust in journalism by providing independent, high quality and authenticated information. The articles, written by academics and researchers with some help from professional journalists, are organised by subject areas like in any online version of a broadsheet newspaper: Arts & Culture, Business & Economy, Education, Environment & Energy, Science & Technology, etc. Interestingly, each article displays a disclosure statement indicating the author’s funding and any potential conflict of interest. The Fact Check UK section includes the statement being checked (e.g. ‘Is freezing eggs really ‘extremely unsuccessful’?), the link to its original source, a Verdict and a Review by an academic who gives his/her opinion on whether and why the author of the statement is right or wrong.

    Databases, Streaming/Download

This database was created by two Berliners to document and catalogue atrocities in the Syrian war. As of March 2017 the site has records of nearly 4,000 separate incidents, accompanied by video footage and indexed according to ten categories, including Violation of children’s rights; Use of illegal weapons; Unlawful attacks and Alleged Civilian Casualties from Russian attacks. The resource is intended for journalists, researcher, human rights organisations, activists and any group with an interest in the conflict. It is also intended to function as a repository of evidence for future historians. The United Nations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as lawyers and activists around the world, have all made use of the archive. This article on the Deutsche Welle website, features comments from the site’s creators, who talk about their reasons for making it, along with some of the problems they have faced, particularly the difficulties of verifying sources in a war zone

Please note: the nature of this resource means that some of the footage is extremely graphic.
