A weekly news magazine radio programme and podcast which takes a look at things from "a secular, rationalist, skeptical, somewhat lefty-liberal, sort of perspective". Covers politics, science, religion, social networking, ethics, medicine and anything else which it considers germane to its free-thinking approach, with the aim of producing a superficially light-hearted but essentially serious and thought-provoking series of programmes aimed at the intelligent general listener.

The stated aim of this resource is to create a public space to discuss issues at the point where science and social policy intersect. The site presents a series of lectures, interviews and readings from various conferences and symposia with the emphasis on serious current scientific research and its moral, ethical and philosophical implications. The subjects covered include cognitive science, neuroscience, stem cell research, oncology, evolution and aging. The site has much that is interesting but of particular note are the proceedings of the Beyond Belief conference, a lively wide-ranging conference on science and religion featuring a large group of eminent scientists and philosophers, including Richard Dawkins, biologist and philosopher Francisco J. Ayala, planetary scientist Carolyn Porco and co-founder and Director of The Science Network Roger Bingham. TSN’s website features streaming videos and podcasts, which are also available for download.

During 1998 and 1999, forty BBC local radio stations recorded personal oral histories from a broad cross-section of the population for the series The Century Speaks. The result was 640 half-hour radio documentaries, broadcast in the final weeks of the millennium, and one of the largest single oral history collections in Europe, the Millennium Memory Bank (MMB). Contributors were either recruited from established groups within the community or chosen from responses to appeals broadcast over the radio: interviewees ranged in age from five to 107 years old and were drawn from a diversity of ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. The project sought to focus on local, everyday experiences and interviewees were encouraged to reflect on events and change at a community level rather than on the wider world stage.

The Listening Project is an ambitious partnership between BBC Radio 4, BBC local and national radio stations, and the British Library. Begun in 2012, people up and down the country are invited to submit an intimate conversation with a close friend or relative, to help to build a unique picture of our lives today through listening to two people chatting, nattering, conversing, confessing, and communicating. Some of these conversations will be broadcast across BBC radio and then held in the British Library Sound Archive, preserving them for future generations.

This self-styled ‘Robin Hood of the avant-garde’ was established 15 years ago as an archive and distributor of art films and is now partially based in Mexico. The disclaimer tells us: ‘All materials are for non-commercial and / or educational use only.' There is some fascinating and rare work here as well as some genuine obscurities. Along with Tweets and podcasts, the site hosts dozens of films, shorts and features, ranging from early works by the likes of Brian de Palma and Joseph Cornell to more widely-known experimental filmmakers such as Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau and Steve McQueen. Part of the site is now devoted to electronic music and sound. The website is large and cleanly laid out though the lack of any guided search tools is unfortunate - the legal aspects behind the hosting of much of the content is at best questionable, but its intentions are seemingly honourable.

A project co-ordinated by the World Service to build a sound map of the world by asking listeners to send in recordings of sounds from their regions, particularly ones that might be in danger of disappearing. The site includes a couple of Discovery programmes featuring a range of experts concerned with acoustic ecology in the urban soundscape, as well as tips on making recordings. The project has now ended and the website is no longer being updated, but the sounds that have been gathered are still available on demand or as podcasts.
