The Open Society Archives (OSA) at the Central European University in Budapest, collects, preserves and makes available documents and films relating to recent Eastern European History, particularly relating to Communism, the Cold War and human rights. Founded by George Soros in 1995, the OSA is a campaigning organisation and part of its mission is to develop new ways of contextualising primary resources: hence the wide range of exhibitions, projects and information presented on this stimulating and cleverly designed website. A number of resources, including Themed resource guides will help researchers navigate the wide range of material available, while the OSA TV part of the site presents video recordings of public lectures, events and exhibitions, as well as videos from the archival collections.

This award-winning resource was created in 2011 by EUROCLIO, the European Association of History Educators. It offers a wealth of digitised material from museums, archives and other heritage institutes and is primarily aimed at KS4+ history students and their teachers, but has also been used for cross-curricular teaching, in subjects such as Geography, and some of the material would be of interest to those in Further and Higher Education.

The impetus behind the site’s creation was to promote ‘the acquisition of cross-border historical knowledge and the development of critical thinking’: in other words to give students the knowledge and critical apparatus to compare the way in which historical events and developments have been presented in different ways by different nations, showing different national and political perspectives.

The site is easy to navigate and structured to guide teachers though a variety of approaches to learning, by themes, locations and people. A Sources page gives access to digitised posters, paintings, maps, drawings and cartoons as well as a number of Audiovisual sources.

‘Screening European Heritage’ is an AHRC project set up to explore the ways in which heritage films across Europe choose to present the continent’s history.
Run by the Centre for World Cinemas at the University of Leeds and B-Film: The Birmingham Centre for Film Studies, the project was set up to explore the ways in which heritage films across Europe choose to present the continent’s history, particularly how film interacts with the wider heritage sector. The project website features regular news updates, a video by Professor Paul Cooke, giving a brief introduction to the project’s aims and a number of resources, including video essays, presentations and interviews with scholars and researchers.

This on-demand video service offers television and radio programmes broadcast by Irish public state broadcaster, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). Originally only available to Irish viewers, RTÉ player is now streaming its programmes worldwide. As well as current broadcast output, including drama, entertainment, news and sport, the broadcaster has also has a Classics category, featuring selected items from RTÉ's archive dating back to the 1960s. Also of interest to researchers is the RTÉ TV 50 site, which was created to celebrate fifty years of Irish television. Here the viewer can see clips from the earliest days of RTÉ, read a decade by decade history of the broadcaster, and, in the Clip of the Week section, see how RTE reported national events, social trends and cultural highlights over the past five decades, including a look at the impact of emigration from the West of Ireland in the early 1970s, an encounter with the Beatles at Dublin airport, and a feminist protest at the Forty Foot pool, a traditional male-only swimming point at Sandycove, Dublin.

In May 2010, with funding from the EU, The Lithuanian Central State Archive began a three year project to preserve and digitise its film and video collections. The results of this initiative are now available to researchers online, in an English language version as well as Lithuanian. The digitised films comprise a representative portion of LCVA’s collection of nearly 9,000 films, including Lithuanian newsreels from 1918-1940, films from the German occupation period, documentaries produced by Lithuanian Film Studio and examples from Lithuanian Television between 1946-1990, as well as a number of excerpts from the first Lithuanian feature films. To make searching easier the films have been organised into a number of different collections, which include a number of thematic categories, such as War Chronicles. An advanced search page lets researchers filter by topic, contributor, place and language. All the films are accompanied by detailed information for cast, credits and synopses, making this a valuable resource for film historians, newsreel researchers and students of Lithuanian culture and language.

From the 21st October 2013, the Canadian charity War Amps, will begin to make available online the entire collection of the Canadian Army Film Unit from World War II. In association with Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and veterans of the Film Unit, War Amps will be releasing one issue every week via its YouTube channel, until November 2015, when all 106 newsreels will be online.

The films were shot on 35mm film by soldiers who had been trained to use cameras, as well as professional cameramen recruited into the Canadian Army for the purpose of documenting the force. Because the initial purpose of the unit was to document training there is no footage of front line action prior to 1943. However, later newsreels do feature footage from the front line, including the invasion of Sicily, the raid on Dieppe and the D-Day landings.
