Academics from the University of Edinburgh discuss a theme of contemporary relevance in this monthly podcast. The first episode saw professors from the schools of law, economics and history discuss the issues associated with Scottish independence before the 2014 referendum. Other podcasts have more of a magazine format, covering several topics, but the general focus is on current political, economic and social issues, including migration within the EU, the rise of Russian nationalism, and women’s rights, as well as more local issues, such as Scottish oral history and the negative effects of Edinburgh’s self-image. The podcast is also available on iTunes.

The OU Learn podcasts are divided into fourteen subject areas from Arts and Humanities to Social Sciences. Within each subject area, the podcasts are further arranged as ‘albums’ consisting of numbered tracks, containing material relevant to OU courses. The podcasts come with transcripts, related links and often feature video material too. Users can subscribe via RSS feed, iTunes, or Miro.

A portal which helps people to ‘find great podcasts’. Curated by Max Temkin and Veronica Corzo-Duchardt, the site presents a selection of mainly American podcasts, arranged under a number of topics, including Tech, Science & Education, Politics & Econ and Storytelling. An Interview page features transcripts of question and answer sessions with podcasters, writers, designers and other culturally-aware, creative people, who talk about their favourite podcasts, and why (and how) they like listening to them. The site works well because its focus is fairly narrow: the emphasis is on curation, and presenting a carefully selected range of interesting podcasts, rather than a comprehensive but overwhelming list of resources.

These brief animated films are narrated by comedian David Mitchell and were developed by a team from the Open University’s Science faculty. The videos cover concepts such as dark matter, the Big Bang, asteroids, black holes and event horizons, aiming to explain big scientific ideas and, in the words of OU Reader in Cosmology Dr Stephen Serjeant, ‘still have room for a few jokes’. The films are available on YouTube and can be downloaded for free from iTunes. A sister series 60 Second Adventures in Economics takes a similar approach to explaining concepts of economic theory.

Offering educational videos for free is the laudable aim of this website, which has resources in three subject areas: History of Art, Economics, and Science & Innovation. The videos in the History of Arts section are available in French and English versions. The site aims for quality over quantity, presenting a number of HD video essays, each of which, for the History of Art section, focuses on a single painting, including Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors and Liberty Leading the People by Delacroix. Material for Economics and Science is currently only available in French. Some of the films can also be bought as DVDs.

Founded in 2005, this American site pioneered split-screen video dialogues - or diavlogs - about politics and ideas. A central aspiration of the site is to present a diversity of views, rather than cleaving to a dominant ideology. The result is a lively forum that aims to help people see things from perspectives other than their own. The site features a number of different programmes, from Foreign Entanglements, which debates American foreign policy, to The DMZ, in which Liberal Bill Scher and conservative Matt Lewis discuss recent political events. The site’s main focus is political but culture and the arts, science, and socionomic issues are also represented. The site is well presented and the videos themselves have bookmarks to help navigation, which is helpful given the digressive nature of some of the material, such as this video where scientist John Horgan enthuses about why Jane Austen was like a scientist.

This online encylopedia from Italy consists of thousands of short videos - generally between three and five minutes long, many of them based on entries from the Treccani Encyclopaedia and approved by the Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana. Topics covered include Art and Design; Cinema; Culture; Economics and Politics; Music and Dance; Tourism; Science and Sport. This could be a good resource for Italian language students but the breathless editing and distractingly loud music which accompanies the voiceovers does not necessarily present the content in its best light.
