This royalty free stock footage source is particularly well-designed and easy to use and offers moving images and stills from the birth of cinema up to 1996, with the largest range of material dating from the 1940s. Titles are nearly all non-fiction and drawn largely from U.S. government agency sources. It is possible to search by specific day, month, year or decade; while the broad keywording is very efficient, the resource has a default primary emphasis on geographical location.

Thinkbox is the marketing body for commercial TV in the UK, in all its forms. The attractive website provides a cornucopia of information on an extremely wide range of topics relating to television viewing habits including articles, statistics, case studies and research on TV effectiveness, new TV technologies and services, and programming information with links to broadcasters’ own sites. They also hold free training workshops and presentations around the country on topics such as the latest research on how our brains process TV and online experiences and what this means for creativity and planning, and the emerging platforms for distribution of TV content and how these are affecting the nature of TV viewing and advertising. Many of these events are streamed as live webcasts and then made available later for viewing on-demand. A separate section of the website provides a gallery of recent television adverts and older classic ones by theme. Most of the content of the website is available on open access, and other areas after free registration.
Its shareholders are Channel 4, Five, GMTV, ITV, Sky Media and Turner Media Innovations Thinkbox works with the marketing community with a single ambition: to help advertisers get the best out of today’s TV.

Part of the American Museum of the Moving Image site, this is an online exhibition containing 183 television commercials, from every American presidential election from 1952 to 2004. The ‘Desktop Candidate’ section of the site contains internet-based campaigns from 2004 onwards. The ads can be accessed chronologically or by theme. For each election year there is a selection of commercials, an analysis of each major partys advertising campaign, and a map showing the election results. The ‘Play All’ option allows the user to watch each years commercials in sequence. Uses RealVideo or Windows Media Player (56K, 100K or 300K). There is good supporting information and teaching resources in what is a model package.

This French site is based on the Jean-Marie Boursicot Cinema Library’s database of over 800 000 advertising commercials. Several hundreds of these are streamed at no charge in RealVideo format (with higher quality MPEG available), searchable by keyword, brand, year, business sector, type of product and country. There are no searching instructions, and some of the categorisation is unclear, but the range of adverts available is considerable, from Icelandic milk ads, to jeans in Lebanon, Guinness ads from the UK, and Adidas from Argentina. Individual records provide links to other adverts by the same sector, brand and product, and sometimes give the agency and length. Information about such a remarkable resource is scanty. In English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. For a fee of $11.99 it is also possible to view online all 6 hours of the 2005 edition of the ‘Night of the Adeaters’ festival of 500 of the most creative advertising films from around the world. (A reduced fee allows access to 90 minutes of screenings).
