Management Classics

Synopsis
Thee classic interviews with prominent management consultants of their time.
1 (1974, 24 min): Dr Laurence J Peter offers a disturbing insight into why people get promoted to their level of incompetence. His ‘Peter principle’ state that, ‘In a hierarchy, an employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence and that’s where he stays’. Asks why people continue to struggle up the hierarchy of an organisation when it may not be good for them or for business.
2 (1973, 25 min): Professor Fred Herzberg, known for his work on motivation, talks to an audience of British managers on his thesis that people have two distinct kinds of needs at work: they way they are treated at work i.e. with regard to salary, supervision and working conditions, which he calls ‘hygiene needs’; and by what they do at work. His talk covers the areas of job enrichment, work expansion and communication.
3 (1972, 25 min): A highly personal view of how organisations should be run, by Robert Townsend, former chairman of Avis Rent-A-Car Corporation. He discussses the chief executive, the personnel department, computers, management consultants, the board of directors and the public relations department.
