Synopsis
Examines how the concept of empowerment is interpreted in practice in five different organisations: McDonalds (fast food chain), Alliance Account (telephone banking), Rover (Land Rover car production), HarperCollins (publishers) and Suma (wholefood co-operative). Raises issues such as control, performance monitoring, feedback, team working, motivation, and limits to empowerment, revealing something of the balance required in simultaneously maintaining organisational control and encouraging empowerment.
