60 Years of Radio, originally broadcast by Essex Radio who have set up a radio station in the birthplace of radio, Chelmsford. Betty Hantz, Marconi historian, tells of Marconi’s life from his childhood, interests in wireless broadcasting, and how the idea he patented became his life’s work. Also on the tests he faced to get his idea to work across the curvature of the Earth, and Ernie Pagett(?), an assistant of Marconi’s, recalls the first transatlantic radio signal to be sent. Original clips of the early radio shows are included. The Marconi company intended only for information to be transmitted, not entertainment- the programme dicusses the rise of entertainment broadcasting. Also Doug Holden(?) of Marconi on work on commercial radio stations. Narrated by Steve Wood, produced by John Wellington, researched and compiled by Dave Gilby and Dennis Rookard.
