Summary
Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: A visit to Doornfontein the farm of Mr D. C. Lilford whose progressive measures include the introduction of Santa Gertrudis cattle from the famous King Ranch of Texas.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - The day starts early for Mr and Mrs D. C. Lilford on their farm Doornfontein outside Salisbury, for Boss Lilford is one of Rhodesia’s most progressive farmers. His pride and joy is the herd of Santa Gertrudis cattle which he has introduced and is carefully building up. They originated on the famous King Ranch in Texas, and have only recently arrived. They are hardy, good foragers, and attain phenominal weights in a comparatively short time. Boss Lilford’s Santa Gertrudis stock is all young, the youngest was born on the boat coming from America, and bashes on the kitchen door if her milk bottle is late. She ought to be a better forager but she just couldn’t be a better scrounger.
Boss Lilford grows his own fodder, and lays down silage for the lean months. Pastures are one of his pet enthusiasms and he grows experimental pastures of Rhodes and other grasses, proving Research Station findings on a larger scale. He regards grass as a valuable allie, turning tobacco lands over to grass leys for 4 years rejuvenation. When ploughed in, they lay the foundation of a bumper crop without impoverishing the soil.
