Summary
NoS synopsis: Looks at different types of rubbish generated by society, and the problems of quantity and how to dispose of it, including recycling. Shows waste paper being collected and taken to board mills, where it is used to make cardboard containers and also shows how it is done. Also looks at rags, with cotton ones being used in industrial cleaning material and carpet and roof felt. Woolens are unpicked, cleaned and respun into new textiles. Also considers the processes of recycling waste glass, which can then be used in the manufacture of sandpaper and matches. Also deals with ways of recycling oil, old cars and other scrap metals, as well as the problems caused by plastics, which cannot be salvaged or recycled.
