Summary
BFI Summary - rehearsal of amateur musical production
NCB synopsis: A big musical production is going forward at Worsborough Hall, No. 5 Area, H. Q.
NCB Commentary - Production Headquarters of No. 5 Area in Yorkshire is Worsborough Hall. Off duty they’re producing more than coal.
Back of the Hall an arena is taking shape, an arena which will form the setting for Yorkshire’s biggest amateur theatrical show. This year it’s to be Rose Marie, but by showtime let’s hope it won’t be Rose Marie on Mud.
Arther Newton, whom we’ve already met in Mining Review, is responsible for set-designing on the 120 ft. wide stage. First, he builds models to illustrate each scene. Then he translates his ideas on to canvas for the more-than-lifesize backings. Talent for the 120 strong cast comes from mining people.
Among those taking part will be Sylvia Clegg, Coal Board typist; Denis Winterton, face-worker; Jack Lindsay, Blacksmith; and musical director Kershaw. For Miss Clegg it’s the chorus; Denis Winterton becomes a Mountie; Margot Henley, tracer in the planning department, joins in the chorus too. But musical director Kershaw is a hard task-master. A show which is going to attract 3,000 cash customers a performance has to be just-so well before the night.
In the wings waiting his turn for rehearsal is Blacksmith Lindsay, a changed man now as a lumberjack.
Local initiative and team work is producing a show which should lay them in the aisles of the Worsborough Arena when Rose Marie hits the boards in July.
