- Summary
- COI synopsis: High costs, labour shortage and a hungry world have brought about a revolution down on the farm. This week’s programme looks at new ways to deal with perennial problems. Apples need careful handling - bruising is bad business. But the traditional apple picker, and the best - a human being, is too expensive. Science has the answer. First design a tree for a machine - with apples growing in the right places. Then the machine - with soft rubber coated "fingers" which comb upwards through the tree, imitating the gentle picking action of the human hand.
