- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Trouble in Belgium. DESCRIPTION: Brussels, Liege, Antwerp and other cities tell the same story: public services disrupted, and, in places, paralysed, strikers parading through the streets, and police and troops anticipating serious trouble. The strike and the demonstration began as a protest against the Government’s austerity programme. This itself was due to the damage done to the Belgian economy by events in the Congo. Soon, the strike appeared to be an all-out challenge to the Government by the Socialist-controlled unions. The situation was so grave that King Baudouin decided to fly back with Queen Fabiola from their honeymoon in Spain. SHOTLIST: Key scene. TS strikers parading through the streets. GV same. GV another.
