- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Sun Car. DESCRIPTION: Our pictures show a 1912 Baker Electric Brougham, the first car powered by the rays of the sun. Mounted in a photovoltaic panel on the roof are more than 10,000 silicon cells. The sunlight energises electrons in the cells, and sets them to work charging the car’s 72-volt battery system.
