- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Last of the Battleships. DESCRIPTION: In two world wars, the nucleus of sea-power lay with the Royal Navy’s Battleships. But now, their day is over. HMS Anson, who helped to bring convoys through to Russia has been broken up. Gone, too, HMS Howe. So to the Vanguard: completed in 1946, she was too late for the war, and her guns have never fired in anger. When she left Portsmouth the other day, bound for the breakers yard, she put up a final struggle, running aground within a few yards of the shore. Tugs were straining to pull her off, and after an hour and a half, they succeeded. Vanguard had begun her last journey. So, the tradition of the battleships is handed on to the giants of the future, the carriers with their air-borne striking power. SHOTLIST: Key scene battleship. LS battleships. MLS battleships.
