- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Polaris on Target. DESCRIPTION: The USS George Washington, America’s first nuclear powered missile launching submarine, made history: the first launching of a ballistic missile from a submarine under water. The first Polaris was fired 30 miles off the Florida Coast, and it reached the target area twelve hundred miles away. It took 15 minutes to reach it, and was accurate all the way. Then, number two went up, described by official observers as a little better than the first - and the first was excellent. SHOTLIST: Aerial shot of submarine (George Washington).
