Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The Boat Race. DESCRIPTION: This year’s event was different: Royalty was present. Princess Margaret had come to Putney with her fiancé, Tony Armstrong-Jones, an expert critic, who had himself steered Cambridge to victory in 1950. The Light Blues, as challengers, were out first. Oxford, the Dark Blues, generally regarded as favourites, had adopted oars with spade blades, and had great confidence in them, It wasn’t long before they were taking the lead. Cambridge held on gamely in this very gruelling race. But Oxford won by a length and a quarter. SHOTLIST: LS crews carrying boats to water. TS crowds. MS Princess Margaret and fiancé.
