Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Combined Fleet Exercises. DESCRIPTION: A special naval exercise took place at Malta, for members of the Directing Staff and students of the NATO Staff College. They boarded HMS Duchess, one of eight Daring class ships. They watched her engaging an imaginary submarine with the equipment known as Squid: a mortar which throws a pattern of depth charges ahead of the ship. On the other side of the world, combined exercises were being carried out by ships of the SEATO fleet. British, American and Commonwealth warships worked together. HMS Bulwark was a British Aircraft carrier; taking part in the manoeuvres. Movietone cameramen flew around in a helicopter, and passed the American Carrier, Philippine Sea, making a note of the close integration in this fleet. The South East Asia Treaty Organisation might be described as NATO’s opposite number, in the Far East. SHOTLIST: GV Malta Harbour. MS Duchess lying in harbour. Officer comes on board.
