- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Us Submarine ‘Skate’. DESCRIPTION: The USS Skate, the third American nuclear-powered submarine, at Portland. She’d crossed the Atlantic (submerged) in eight days, eleven hours, the fastest time ever recorded by a submarine. It’s said she has a range of 60,000 miles on a single charge of nuclear fuel. And she’ll no doubt be armed with Polaris missiles that can be fired from under-water: nuclear war-head weapons with a range of 1,500 miles. The Skate has a crew of nine officers and eighty-six men.
