- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Minesweepers in the Canal. DESCRIPTION: A flight over Port Said gave a good answer to all propaganda suggestions that the town was smashed up. Very little damage was apparent. The approach to the Canal was clearly obstructed by Nasser’s blockships. Allied salvage vessels were right on the spot ready to get to work. The Northern section of the Canal itself has been thoroughly swept by British (and French) minesweepers. A few sidelights on British troops off-duty, at a local cup-tie and a spot of sea-bathing. Infantry have taken over from the Paratroops. British troops are continuing their watch on the Canal until an effective United Nations police force is ready. The first UN Contingents landed at Ismailia. Danes and Norwegians formed the advance party of a force originally planned to number about 6,000. SHOTLIST: Aerials of Port Said. Canal scenes: sunken ships, salvage vessels, minesweepers sweeping. Troops play football on beach and swim in sea. Washing their clothes. Deck-chairs in the sun. Royal Scots arrive on the march with the pipe band. UNO troops disembark from plane at Ismailia.
