Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Flood Disaster Aftermath. DESCRIPTION: After the floods - the struggle to fill the breaches; in the King’s Lynn area, Cambridge undergraduates have been lending a hand in the work. In the Netherlands, the floods have broken through the land defences in places too numerous to count; over there, indeed, the disaster is greater even than in Britain. At home, Canvey Island figures prominently in the battle to hold back the sea. Servicemen have been filling sandbags to strengthen the sea-wall all round the clock in an effort to beat the sea. To help the widespread suffering, the Lord Mayor of London has opened a special distress fund. Some of the people overtaken by the calamity of the storm and flood tell their individual stories. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. CU Sluice (water rushing through). Troops filling breaches in seawalls. Cambridge undergraduates carrying sandbags to flooded areas, in King’s Lynn district around the River Ouse. Aerials of Holland flooded, also shows breach in seawall. Several ground shots of flooded areas. Canvey Island, troops filling sandbags, day & by night, several shots of searchlight playing on the active troops. CU water sluice. Interior - SCU Lord Mayor of London, Sir Rupert de la Bere, appeals for aid for the flooded. In Southend Hospital, interview with four women saved from the floods, named. Various shots of Ostend, Belgium, shows seas breaking over the front, roads washed away, flooded streets, boats being rowed through streets.
