Career

George Richardson joined Movietone on demobilisation. Terry Gallacher [qv], who joined the company in October 1945, recalled that ‘George started his work at Movietone after release from the army’: ‘He worked in the shipping department until he was trained and made up to cameraman.' Richardson’s first cameraman credit is for ‘THE CENOTAPH CEREMONY’ in British Movietone News No.1066A of November 1949. He also appeared in the story ''Z’ & ‘G’ CLASS CALL-UP’ in British Movietone News No.1130A of February 1951, giving his opinion on military service - ‘Between you & I it will be a good thing, as a man with three kids etc., etc.' Richardson was regularly employed on domestic news stories, and was listed in the Movietone staff list for October 1951. In January 1952 he again appeared on camera in a comic item entitled ‘FILM NEWS - THE SALES ARE ON’ in British Movietone News No.1179. Richardson’s last credit was as cameraman for ‘HARWELL AT HOME’ in No.1369 of August 1955, and he was apparently part of the exodus from Movietone on the foundation of ITN in September 1955. Terry Gallacher recalled that ‘George joined ITN where he specialised as their sports cameraman, especially cricket, where he developed a system to shoot every ball and discard exposed negative that did not contain required action.' When Reg Sutton [qv] went to Russia in February 1959, covering Harold MacMillan’s visit for British Movietone News, he met Richardson, who was by that time working for the BBC on their Television Newsreel.
