- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Sir Laurence Olivier and his National Theatre Company set off for Moscow to play "Othello" in the Kremlin - and Pathe Pictorial is privileged to be asked, exclusively, to film this cultural visit. The glitter of Red Square and the golden-domed cathedrals at the heart of this elusive city, the ornate pavilions where the first Russian Sputnik is on display, the ordinary and extraordinary people who make up this unknown race are seen through the eyes of our actors. We go to the great department store that is a network of covered shopping streets. We see the Moscow skyscraper hotels and the new apartment blocks that are filling vistas that, eight years ago, were waste land. We meet people and see precisely where the West has outpaced them and where they are ahead. Actors are great ambassadors at breaking language barriers. We see our stars buying buns at the fun-fair, making friends with Red Army soldiers and little children. From an Embassy reception we switch to the Moscow circus and we wind up with Olivier in the Kremlin playing his famous Othello and giving unique impact to a cultural visit that has won acclaim and created contact between worlds that hardly knew how to meet.
