At the end of 2009 this brilliant site designed to teach skills to BBC journalists was opened to public access in the UK. Using hundreds of video and audio examples alongside interactive modules, the site provides masterclasses covering craft skills, law, and ethics & values. There is also an active discussion forum, glossary, and currently a section on covering the general election. It is intended to make the site available by subscription outside the UK. Part of the BBC Academy, see also the separate entry for the sister site, BBC College of Production.

This large and developing resource is part of the BBC Academy, which exists in its own words to put, ‘training and development at the heart of the BBC and also works with the wider broadcast industry, equipping people with skills they need for a lifetime of employability in the ever-changing media landscape.' It also provides courses, some in partnership with Creative Skillset (see separate entry). The site, currently in beta test mode, aims to provide a guide to training resources for those interested in a career in the media, specifically broadcast radio and television. This includes dozens of interviews with industry professionals discussing their areas of expertise. The site is organised as a guide to a wide variety of professional activities, from the lofty heights of director and executive producer to more artisanal jobs such as make-up designer and sound designer. Most of the videos are about 2 to 3 minutes in length and provide succinct profiles of those working in core behind-the-scenes production jobs. The emphasis is split fairly evenly between TV and Radio though there is also a new section devoted to online production that will be expanding. See also the separate entry under BBC College of Journalism. Along with job descriptions there are also practical tips on a broad range of subjects, from how best to shoot and night or to record a ‘vox pops’ to managing the relationship between a presenter and the producer.
