Developed by the Wellcome Trust and now part of Intute, MedHist is a gateway to Internet resources on "the history of medicine and allied sciences, covering all aspects of the history of health and development of medical knowledge". It is possible to search by historical period as well as by categories such as Diseases, Education & research, People, Medical speciality & technique and Locality. In addition there are dozens of narrower categories all of which are plainly but very easy to use and simply presented to try and stop the user becoming overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of information available. NB No new resources have been added to MedHist since February 2010. Existing resources were checked and broken links fixed until July 2011, but this has now ceased, so the resource will become increasingly less useful and reliable.

History is for the most part interpreted as conflict here and features information on films depicting the Vietnam War (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill), the second World War (The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Bridge on the River Kwai), The American Civil War (Gone With The Wind, Gettysburg) as well as coverage of films and tv dramas set in Ancient Rome (I, Claudius, Cleopatra, Spartacus). It provides plot and episode summaries and compares the dramas against historical records with useful timelines and other materials.

This multimedia site is devoted to the works of the poet Wilfred Owen and required Real, Windows Media Player and QuickTime to access some of the content. Although the front page of the site is cluttered and unclear and can be quite discouraging to the casual user and can be rather off-putting, in general WOMDA does in fact contain a wealth of material which can be accessed through the browse page. This includes digital copies of practically all of Owen’s original manuscripts, many of his letters, audio interviews with war veterans, as well as a large number of video clips taken from the Imperial War Museum’s holdings as well as material made more recently, all of which also relates to the First World war in general.

This site is an updated web version of the 1996 book of the same name edited by Stephen Herbert and Luke McKernan. It provides a wealth of material on the origins and the very first days of cinema. The main bulk of the text can be accessed through the literally hundreds of biographical essays, written by such renowned authorities as David Robinson, John Barnes and the late Denis Gifford. Apart from its meticulous cross-referencing, the site also offers a large number of fascinating stills and illustrations as well as breakdowns by personality, country and specific machines. The resources page is also very useful and is divided into nine categories: Chronology, Websites, Books, Journals, Videos, Organizations, Archives, Texts and News & Events. There is also a fine bibliography. Highly recommended.

Formerly the BBC’s Videos for Learning and Teaching and more recently known as BBC Active, this is an important catalogue for the wide-ranging video tapes of previously transmitted programmes offered by the Corporation to educational institutions. Sadly, as part of its rebranding, the prices have increased up by up to a factor of five (the average cost per title is now £125). The material however remains irreplaceable. It includes such classic documentaries as Life on Earth, The Ascent of Man and items from the Horizon series as well as the perennial BBC Shakespeare titles. These can be by title or contributor, as well as by series and by the following subject categories: Anthropology, the Arts, Business, Drama, Education, Engineering, Environment, Literature, Health & Medicine, History, Natural World, Science & Technology and Social Issues. These titles can also be licensed separately for online learning, festival screenings and exhibitions. Please note that only a small part of the holdings are listed online and it is a good idea to request titles directly.

Online film studies journal based in Australia that provides serious but not overly jargonistic articles, reviews of the latest books and films and information on international conferences and even runs job adverts. It also includes links to around forty other sites. It is certainly one of the most straightforward and enjoyable of the many film studies e-journals currently available.
