The result of a joint project between the East Anglian Film Archive and Rouen based Pôle Image Haute-Normandie (PIHN), this Anglo-French collaboration presents hundreds of short films, and excerpts from longer films, from East Anglia and Upper Normandy, tracing the social and cultural history of the two regions in film. Many of the clips are accompanied by informative commentaries which were recorded especially for the project. Users should be aware that the films are not always presented in their original form: a piece about the fishing industry edits together two films, one from the 1930s and one from the 1950s and many of the films which would have originally been silent are accompanied by music as well as a voiceover. This caveat aside, the site, which can be searched by theme, location, year and keyword, is well presented and contains a wealth of fascinating material.

Part of the Media Center for Art History, Archaeology & Historic Preservation site, though apparently not directly linked to it, this site explores Amiens Cathedral from every imaginable angle, through photographs, drawings, computer simulations, Shockwave animations, and QuickTime clips showing 360 degree views of the interior from different stand-points (the navigation is unclear - click on the yellow nodes on the diagram to the right, which increase in number as the user progresses down the nave).

The combined archives of the Gaumont, Éclair and French Pathé news archives, with news material going back to 1896. There are a substantial number of streamed video copies of the Gaumont newsreels, making this site one of the leading sources of online historical news footage in the world. The videos use RealPlayer, for connections from 56K to T1, and the quality of the encodings is very high. The catalogue is available in French and English, the latter appearing to have been produced using a translation programme, which has produced some quaint results.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation has recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary, and its site showcases radio and TV clips from its long history. The clips are organised both thematically and by decade and require Windows MediaPlayer. One can also take a virtual tour of the archive, which also contains much ancillary material which serves to put the large amount of data in context. Highlights include footage of De Gaulle’s inflammatory ‘Vive le Québec libre!' speech, Expo 67, coverage of the 1952 Coronation and this interview with Neil Young from 1969 in which he discusses his reasons for leaving the Buffalo Springfield.

Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
