Created by the National Institute for Health Research, ‘I Am Research’ is tasked with involving patients and the public in all the phases of their work, from health research to the translation of discoveries into practical products, treatments devices and procedures. The site offers a wealth of information including help for researchers on data, samples and how to identify patients for research, and Research facilities in your area, which can be searched by postcode or speciality. There is also a YouTube Channel with short videos about why research is crucial and what getting involved in research studies means to cohorts of different ages. This can be useful for those tasked with explaining what research is in the classroom and those thinking in becoming researchers.

The importance of fungi for all aspects of life on Earth and the size of the fungi kingdom, which is six times larger than the kingdom of plant species, makes research in this little studied field crucial: for example, last year a new species of fungi was discovered in Pakistan which is capable of digesting and breaking down plastic; this could be a part of the solution to the global challenge of clearing plastic in oceans and on the land. The Fungi and Lichens website provides technical (but approachable) accounts of the current status of species in the British Isles, including descriptions, images, distribution data, ecology and conservation information. It is aimed at those with a serious interest in fungi, either as natural historians or professional biologists. The project is run by the Mycology Department at Kew Gardens who has just published the 2018 State of the World’s Fungi report.

This information can be easily viewed at national and territorial level using the Country Profiles searching capabilities; there is also a Case Studies section, and a Seabird Tracking Database, which contains the largest collection of seabird data in the world. This data can be searched and viewed within the site, but access to the actual data is restricted.

This unrivaled moving image material is provided by the Wildlife Trusts across the British Isles. The webcams may not be available all year-round. At present (June 2018) it includes , Peregrines nesting in Derby Cathedral, Nesting barn owls, Cumbria’s only grey seal, Welsh ospreys, Rutland’s nesting ospreys, Puffins on the island of Burhou, Scotland’s red squirrels and many more. Of particular educative value within the website is the section Species, which offers very detailed information on each specific animal or plant. For example, under Amphibians we can look at the Common Frog and find out information regarding its average length, weight and lifespan; details of conservation status, habitats and geographical distribution, and how to identify them.

An independent news website sourced from the academic and research community and delivered direct to the public. The Conversation launched in Australia in March 2011 and in the UK in May 2013. It is a not for profit educational entity, funded by universities, that aims to rebuild trust in journalism by providing independent, high quality and authenticated information. The articles, written by academics and researchers with some help from professional journalists, are organised by subject areas like in any online version of a broadsheet newspaper: Arts & Culture, Business & Economy, Education, Environment & Energy, Science & Technology, etc. Interestingly, each article displays a disclosure statement indicating the author’s funding and any potential conflict of interest. The Fact Check UK section includes the statement being checked (e.g. ‘Is freezing eggs really ‘extremely unsuccessful’?), the link to its original source, a Verdict and a Review by an academic who gives his/her opinion on whether and why the author of the statement is right or wrong.
