Radical Neck Dissection

Synopsis
Radical neck dissection is frequently indicated in the treatment of metastatic disease to cervical lymph nodes. In this programme the patient had a small primary carcinoma in the floor of the mouth which was totally eradicated by radiotherapy. However a large metastatic lymph node in the neck remained. In view of the patient’s age a radical dissection was performed rather than a full ‘Commando’. Possible incisions and their relative advantages are discussed. A methodical and reproducible approach to the operation is described and shown. All the anatomy to be identified and preserved is clearly demonstrated. Areas of the dissection where complications can occur are described and guidance given on avoiding the problems such complications can cause.
