Summary

1947 BBC live studio production of Gerard Tyrrell’s comedy High Horse. The production features the same cast as the stage premiere production which opened at the New Lindsay Theatre in London in December 1946. This was reviewed by ‘Our Theatre Correspondent’ in the Catholic Herald, 20 December 1946: ‘I have no doubt that the author will be the first to agree that in Mary Hinton, Kay Bannerman, Francis Lister and David Evans he had a perfect cast’.

Play synopsis

The comedy ‘concerns a faithful and loving wife of uncertain age and intelligence who suddenly takes to writing romantic higher-art novels and, therefore, to neglecting her worthy, if dull, husband’s needs. A pretty niece also rates the chance of showing a leg on the stage as far more important than pleasing the young man who is in love with her. The fact that her young man in his despair has also written under a pseudonym a novel of the same type which has inspired the wife. and is asked to stay the week-end, introduces the complications and situations which make the play.'
