Summary

COI synopsis: The birth of a healthy child is somewhat akin to a miracle - so many things could go wrong. This programme looks at the resources offered by the British health service to care for a mother and her unborn child, and shows how the service can help when something does go wrong. The trauma of premature birth may be reduced by a new kind of incubator which simulates a soothing womb-like environment. The reassuring thud of mother’s heart, the gentle ripple of her breathing, are recreated by a pulsating base which "breathes" at the same rate as the mother and a water mattress to restore the fluid calm.
