Summary
The March of Time synopsis: For the first time in history a film camera has been allowed in the college precincts and a series of exclusive shots show us scenes in a College dining hall, an undergraduate drinking the "Sconce", the dons sitting in the upper common room after dinner circulating their sherry on a special conveyor, and many other customs and traditions which Oxford has maintained unchanged through the centuries. But the camera also reveals another side of University life - shows students working with out-of-date equipment in dark cellars - films the crowded interior of the world-famous Bodleian Library, many of whose priceless volumes are inaccessible because of cramped inadequate quarters, scenes which show all too clearly that the University’s income has not kept pace with its growing needs. These shots bring home the great significance of the recent princely gifts of Lord Nuffield (who is shown in the film conversing with Lord Halifax, Chancellor of the University), and of the Rockefeller grant which has made possible the building of a new Bodleian Library. The story is also told of how the conservative old University, encouraged by Lord Nuffield’s generosity, has for the first time formed a Committee to appeal to the public for the funds which are still needed to ensure that Oxford may continue to hold her position among the world’s great centres of learning.
